TOKYO, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minster Shinzo Abe on Tuesday welcomed the historic summit held between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

At a press conference, the Japanese leader hailed the agreement signed by U.S. President Donald Trump and DPRK top leader Kim Jong Un in which the two agreed to a complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in exchange for security guarantees for the DPRK.

He noted that such a move would be "a step toward the comprehensive resolution of various issues."

Earlier in the day, the Japanese prime minister told reporters that he had high hopes that the U.S.-DPRK summit would bring about a successful resolution to the DPRK's nuclear and missile program.

Abe said that the DPRK could be facing a brighter and more prosperous future.

The DPRK "has rich natural resources and a diligent workforce. It will have a bright future if it treads down the right path," Abe added.
