HANOI, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's Ministry of Transport supports the development of self-driving cars because it is in line with the government's strategy on the fourth industrial revolution development, local media reported Monday.

The ministry has positively responded to a proposal by a local technology firm named FPT Software on allowing it to operate its driverless cars on a trial basis on internal road in a hi-tech park in Ho Chi Minh City, local newspaper Giao Thong Van Tai (Transport) reported on Monday.

In 2016, FPT Software established a specialized unit to develop automotive applications, including autonomous cars which are capable of sensing their environment and navigating without human input.

The firm said its driverless cars can run at a speed of 25 km per hour, and automatically brake or avoid obstacles.

Self-driving cars combine various techniques to perceive their surroundings, including radar, laser light, GPS, odometry, and computer vision.
