BARRANQUILLA, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Colombia was held to a goalless home draw by Peru in their FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday, leaving the Cafeteros facing a potentially hazardous run to secure a place in football's showpiece tournament.
The hosts controlled 71 percent of possession and completed twice as many passes as Peru but failed to register a single shot on target against an organized yet largely unthreatening Blanquirroja outfit.
The result at Barranquilla's Estadio Metropolitano extended Colombia's winless streak in the qualifiers to five games. Nestor Lorenzo's men are now sixth in the 10-team South American standings with 21 points, three ahead of seventh-placed Venezuela, with three matches remaining.
The top six teams will earn automatic entry to next year's World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, while the seventh-placed side will contest a playoff.
Colombia will face Argentina in Buenos Aires on Tuesday before concluding its qualifying campaign with a home match against Bolivia and a trip to Venezuela in September.
Peru remains ninth in the group, seven points shy of the only playoff spot, with fixtures against Ecuador (home), Uruguay (away) and Paraguay (home) left to play. ■
