ASMARA, June 8 (Xinhua) -- The 2025 Asmara Marathon kicked off on Sunday in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, attracting more than 10,000 runners to participate in a range of categories, including a public joint run, a wheelchair race, a women's 10km race, and a men's marathon.

Athletes from Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and various regions of Eritrea took part in the fifth edition of the event this year.

In the most high-profile race, Desale Debesay of Eritrea crossed the finish line first with a time of two hours, 16 minutes and 28 seconds. He was followed by fellow countryman Nahom Ermias, while Kusimba Denis of Kenya took third place.

"I'm a bit disappointed today because I came the second. I won the first place last time, but this is the charm of sports. You have to give your best each time," Ermias said after the race.

Beyond the competitive aspect, the Asmara Marathon is affectionately known as the "People's Joint Run." This inclusive public run, open to all genders and ages, promotes sports culture and a healthy lifestyle in Eritrea.

Asmara's elevation of 2,325 meters makes it the sixth-highest capital city in the world and the second-highest in Africa. For athletes, the high altitude presents a challenge, but the city remains an ideal center for elite training and a birthplace of emerging talent. Its renowned architectural beauty, environmental cleanliness, and atmosphere of peace and tranquility further enhance its appeal as a host for major sporting events.
