LOS ANGELES, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is preparing a proposal to revoke a landmark scientific finding that greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels pose a threat to human health, a move that could significantly weaken the federal government's ability to combat climate change, according to U.S. media reports.

The draft proposal would overturn the 2009 "endangerment finding," which underpins limits on greenhouse gas emissions for vehicles and power plants, The Washington Post reported Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the plan.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced in March the agency would reconsider the rule as part of a broader push to roll back environmental regulations the Trump administration views as burdensome to the fossil fuel and transportation industries.

While the proposal is still in draft form and subject to change, environmental experts warn that rescinding the "endangerment finding" would effectively dismantle the federal government's primary legal mechanism for addressing climate change. ■
