RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Leading Brazilian presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro said on Friday in a TV interview that he will not acknowledge any result that is not his own victory, provoking widespread criticism.

"For what I see in the streets, I will not accept any result that is not my own election," he said, implying that only fraud would explain an election loss.

Candidate Marina Silva, a veteran in her third consecutive presidential race, said on Twitter that candidates must respect the results of an election.

"Statements like Bolsonaro's are typical of those who can already smell defeat," she said.

Another candidate Geraldo Alckmin who is running for president for the second time said Bolsonaro is not prepared to rule.

According to the poll by consulting company Datafolha, voting intentions for Bolsonaro, a right-wing politician from the Social Liberal Party, was 28 percent, the highest among all the candidates.

Though Bolsonaro has the lead in the first round, he lost to Fernando Haddad, who replaced Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as the Workers' Party's candidate, in second-round simulations with 39 percent versus Haddad's 45 percent.

Bolsonaro suffered a grave injury to his intestines and has been hospitalized ever since. The doctors said he is recovering well and will most likely be discharged over the weekend.

The first round of voting in the Brazilian presidential election is set for October 7.
