KAMPALA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday inspected a 120 million U.S. dollar security camera installation project aimed at helping in the fight against the increase of crime in the country.

Museveni accompanied by senior military, police officers and Chinese engineers toured and monitored the operation of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the national command center at Nateete Police Division offices in the capital Kampala.

He said the cameras will help in boosting intelligence collection.

Police last month launched the installation of 5,552 CCTV cameras in its first phase, which is expected to be completed in July 2019 in Kampala and other major towns.

The police said the first phase also includes networking all police stations in the country and construction of a national command center.

The cameras will also be installed on highways to track down traffic offenders.

Government contracted Chinese firm Huawei to install the cameras. Enditem
