NEW DELHI, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Indian government officials on Thursday held a key meeting with representatives of social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, YouTube, Instagram, and Google, to review actions taken to prevent misuse of social media sites.

According to government sources, undesirable elements in the Indian society had been seen having the tendency to spread rumours, cause unrest, incite cyber crimes, especially against women and children, and other activities detrimental to national interest by using such social media platforms.

According to the sources, the representatives of these social media platforms briefed the Indian government representatives about the actions they took in the recent past to ensure blocking of such websites, removal of objectionable and malicious contents from public view.

Indian Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba called upon the social media's representatives to take concrete steps to ensure a robust and effective system for preventing misuse of their platforms for activities detrimental to national security.

The social media platforms' representatives assured full cooperation in this regard, added the sources.
