SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, April 13 (Xinhua) -- A fierce gunfight between militants and Indian troops broke out on Saturday in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight erupted at village Gahand of Shopian district, about 60 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"This morning a gunfight started between militants and joint contingents of police, paramilitary and army here at village Gahand," a senior police official posted in Shopian told Xinhua. "Two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area."

Officials said the village was cordoned off following specific intelligence information suggesting presence of militants.

"We are sure militants have suffered casualties," the police official said. "The firing has stopped and searches are going on."

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.
