ANKARA, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Syrian government warplanes on Thursday opened fire near a Turkish observation point in Syria's Idlib province, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The Syrian jets fired heavy machine guns at an area only about 7.5 km southwest of the 8th Turkish observation point in south of Tel Tukan region, the agency reported, quoting anonymous Turkish security officials.

The report, calling the Syrian move as continued violation of last year's cease-fire agreement, noted there were no damage or loss caused to the observation point.

On Monday, three civilians were killed and 12 others were injured in an airstrike on a Turkish military convoy, which was on its way to the 9th observation point in Idlib, Turkish Defense Ministry said.

The ministry noted that the Turkish convoy was part of the deployment of troops to the region to secure the observation point there, keep the supply routes open and prevent further loss of civilians in the region.

Turkey and Russia agreed last September to turn Idlib, the last major rebel stronghold in Syria, into a de-escalation zone that prohibited acts of aggression. The deal, however, has largely failed despite several attempts to revive it.

Turkey established 12 observations points around Idlib under the framework of this deal, aiming to maintain the ceasefire between the Syrian government and rebels.
